📝 Victorinox Spartan Lite

A Modern Inline-Phillips EDC with LED

Introduction

The Victorinox Spartan Lite is a modern reinterpretation of the classic 91 mm Spartan.

Introduced in 2004, it combines the traditional Spartan toolset with a LED / inline Phillips module. In this configuration, the Spartan Lite continues the philosophy previously explored by the Passenger and later the Scientist: offering the slimmest possible 91 mm knife with an inline Phillips screwdriver, this time modernized by replacing the magnifying glass with an LED light.

The model remained in production for two decades before being discontinued in the 2024 Victorinox catalogue.

I. Technical Overview

The Spartan Lite follows the classic 91 mm Officer Knife architecture, with the addition of a combined LED / inline Phillips layer.

Keyring

II. The LED / Inline Phillips Module

The defining feature of the Spartan Lite is its combined LED and inline Phillips layer.

To accommodate the lighting module, the inline Phillips screwdriver was relocated to the bottom pivot, next to the small blade. For this configuration Victorinox introduced a shortened version of the inline Phillips, specifically adapted to coexist with the LED module.

Two versions of the LED module can be observed:

Early module – grey housing
The first generation uses a grey LED unit, matching the early Lite modules introduced in 2004.

Later module – transparent housing
Later production runs feature a transparent LED module, a design update that appears to have occurred in the early 2010s.

The LED module is powered by two CR1225 lithium batteries, accessible in the lite module.

III. The 2004 “Lite” Generation

The Spartan Lite was introduced in 2004 as part of a new generation of Victorinox knives integrating LED illumination.

Other models released alongside it include:

  • Huntsman Lite
  • Voyager Lite

These knives represent Victorinox’s effort to modernize the Swiss Army Knife by integrating simple electronic functionality without altering the traditional 91 mm architecture.

This generation followed earlier electronic experiments such as the Cybertools and Voyager series, but focused on practical illumination.

IV. Discontinuation

After roughly twenty years of production, the Spartan Lite was discontinued in the 2024 Victorinox catalogue, marking the end of this configuration in the 91 mm range.

Its disappearance reflects the gradual simplification of the Victorinox lineup and the reduced presence of electronic modules in modern Swiss Army Knife models.

Conclusion

The Victorinox Spartan Lite illustrates how the Swiss Army Knife continued to evolve into the twenty-first century.

By combining the traditional Spartan architecture with a compact LED lighting module, Victorinox created a knife that blended classic mechanical tools with modern everyday functionality.

With its discontinuation in 2024, the Spartan Lite also marks the closing chapter of a long line of 91 mm experiments aimed at keeping the inline Phillips screwdriver in the slimmest possible format — a lineage that began with the Passenger and Scientist decades earlier.
